May 2016 - Teams

Much has been made of Leicester City beating odds of 5000 to 1 in order to win the Premiership Football Trophy. Closer to home our own Hereford FC have also exceeded many people's expectations this year by winning their league title as well as playing in the FA Vase Final at Wembley.

Leicester built a team with a squad costing very little money in relative terms; Pete Beadle built his team with no money at all. So how do you build a winning team?

Whether it is a sports team or a business team there is no formula. How can there be any kind of prescription with so many diverse human beings? However there are some things that winning teams have in common and they are well worth noting.

Firstly, the culture in any organisation always comes from the person at the top. The boss will make sure that members are committed to team goals; in other words there are no stars, but everyone genuinely puts the team before the individual.

Team players depend on each other; they recognise that where the team is concerned, one and one really can make three or even four.

Winning team members are willing to work together; everyone understands that cooperation and communication between each other is vital. These people go even further by sharing a common sense of belonging to each other. And they work harder because of this.

There is inevitably going to be conflict at some stage or other on the journey. Conflict is a normal part of team dynamics and problem solving. The great managers have developed effective mechanisms for handling conflict.

Lastly, leaders are never afraid to openly and honestly evaluate actual performance on a regular basis and then take corrective action. Sounds familiar.
