March 2018 - Time

Since time is such a valuable resource for individuals and organisations it is worth evaluating just how effectively and efficiently it is being used on a regular basis.

About five years ago we stopped our daily newspaper, the Independent, and stopped listening to BBC Radio Four Today programme in the morning. It seemed then, and it is even more the case now, that there are better ways of getting immediate information and knowledge.

The problem with both those sources of interest is that someone else chooses what it is that you focus upon. The daily newspaper has its front-page headline and the words are created to attract attention. But if the subject is bird flu, for example, and you have absolutely no interest in bird flu, then you have already wasted time taking input that you don't want or need.

It is the same with a radio news programme. Somebody else chooses the topics that you are going to listen to. Contrast this with, for example, the BBC news website where you can scan across vast amounts of headline data in seconds. Then you can choose the topics that you want to study in more detail.

In business, the same principal applies. We must look critically at how we use technology because some of it wastes prodigious amounts of both time and energy. But what matters is that the data computers can and do produce is used to help the senior team in meeting, discussing and deciding upon jugular issues in a positive, timely and proactive way.

Some businesses started using Twitter and then abandoned it; others refused Facebook but now report positive business benefits and vice versa. For special interest business content there are some superb sites containing a wealth of free information. Other businesses want you to engage more by signing up to their App. Choose carefully.....
