March 2016 - Risk and Rewards

All small business owners have to weigh up the risks of how they go about doing business against potential rewards.

In Bangkok for example, some 15 million people can possibly be on the move each day in about 8 million registered vehicles; there are many more unregistered vehicles. This means that most main routes in the city and many minor roads are more or less blocked from dawn to well after dusk. The sky train is often rammed and the river boat taxis are often standing room only.

So, many young men have decided to offer their services as motor bike taxi drivers. During rush hours in particular you will see hundreds of boys slaloming their way back and forth across five lane freeways, often missing cars by a whisker. Their passengers are mainly young females who ride pillion or side saddle depending on what they are wearing on the day.

These customers scorn safety helmets for the most part, so that their long black straight hair streams out behind them, as their driver zig zags back and forth. Bottlenecks are frequent so as traffic light clocks tick down the seconds from red to green, engines are revved by everyone seeking to gain that yard or two forward. Like a swarm of hornets the bikes jostle for pole position to get ahead of each other and the motorists.

The official Bangkok handbook acknowledges that motor bike taxis are the fastest way to get across the city. However it advises that we tourists should not even think about trying one since the practice is highly dangerous. They say "It is better to arrive late than not at all!"
