April 2016 - The Vote

We make important decisions that affect our business all the time. And yet at the very split second when we have to commit one way or another I wonder whether it is an intuitive, illogical, factual or speculative stance that we prefer to take.

Back in May 1975 I was asleep in my London SW16 flat when the alarm sounded at two in the morning. I got up, collected a black paint spray can and then jogged the two hundred yards to a road bridge crossing the railway line. I uncapped the can and sprayed, in big capital letters, VOTE 'OUI' FOR THE EEC.

In those days, issues of sovereignty, the economy, immigration, security, Trades Union Congress opposition and much more besides were all on the agenda. Yet there were very, very few people that had the intellect, the knowledge or even the inclination to be able to engage in a logical, informed discussion about what would happen if we stayed in the EEC or decided to leave. And certainly not a 25 year old accountancy student.

Forty one years on and some believe that there is still time for open, honest, balanced forums in order to weigh up the issues and make an informed voting decision in June 2016. For 99% of the electorate, just as in 1975, this is an unrealistic expectation.

The truth is that no one knows for certain what will happen either way. What will influence the majority of people on 23rd June is the leadership and statesmanship from public figures that they trust and respect. By the time those still debating come out with their views it will be too late. Whatever they say, whatever words they use, whatever arguments they put will be lost in a crescendo of noise as the vote gets closer.

How will you vote? I'll stick with my intuition.
